The recent collaboration with our Virginia Dental Association colleagues and subsequent defeat of legislation that would allow insurance companies to set fees for non-covered services has fostered an even stronger working relationship between our associations. We have demonstrated that we are dedicated and committed to protecting the oral and systemic health of the public we serve.
Now it is more important than ever for us to protect and advance dental hygiene in Virginia.
Due to today’s economy, many members have had to reduce their contributions toward our legislative representation. It is imperative that we proactively participate in the reorganization of the regulations that govern the practice of our profession. It is critical that we have representation during these upcoming Board of Dentistry meetings so that our voice will be heard and our scope of practice will remain intact. In order to do this, VDHA needs your support. Please help achieve this goal by contributing to VDHA’s Legislative Fund. Every dollar we raise will help to ensure our ability to practice as registered dental hygienists for many years to come.
Please send your contribution today to:

An invitation to join in the mission of making a greater difference. I am grateful and proud that we can all enjoy the benefits of being part of a "professional" family right here on the Peninsula via organized Dental Hygiene. It is true that everyone is needed, so please, consider the PDHA just like your second family that also depends upon your special and individualized contributions of volunteerism and leadership. As you well know, you always receive so much more when you give of yourself.

The Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association stormed the halls of the Virginia General Assembly during its first of two annual Rally Days at the Capital on Tuesday, January 18th. The 54 students from Old Dominion University and Thomas Nelson Community College and 6 licensed dental hygienists and faculty enthusiastically communicated the message of professionals promoting oral health for all citizens of the Commonwealth. This group of advocates visited with legislators, dropped off oral health goody bags for legislators and aides, observed the Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee meeting of the House of Delegates, toured the Capital, received introduction in the House and Senate Galleries, and a few had the exciting opportunity to visit with the Governor. Friday, January 21st will be the second, annual Rally Day to be attended by students and dental hygienists from other parts of Virginia. Our gratitude goes out to all participants for dedicating a day to the civic activity of advancing the public’s health and the dental hygiene profession. The bus transportation of 50 participants from the Hampton Roads area was financed by a grant from the VDHA Foundation.

Trustees, please circulate to your components. I hope to put out a ADHA VOCUS to inform all members.

"Effective August 25, 2007, the period of time in which treatment by a dental hygienist under general supervision might occur before the dentist examines the patient again is increased from a maximum of seven (7) months to ten (10) months from the date the dentist last examined the patient. This change to the general supervision regulations at 18 VAC 60-20-210.D(1) was adopted by the Board to respond to concerns raised by dentists and dental hygienists about patients who need multiple hygiene visits and those who are unable to schedule appointments for complete examinations every 6 to 7 months due to either time conflicts or costs. The order for treatment under general supervision must specify the time period in which the prescribe treatment must be rendered. Orders written prior to August 25, 2007 may be amended to reflect this regulatory change."
